Caleb Witty, 17, and his younger sister were walking home from a street fair when they were shot.
Police say they have finally caught the people who shot and killed an Illinois teen during a robbery, more than a decade after the crime.
The Decatur Police Department said in a news statement that two people tried to rob Caleb Witty, 17, and his sister, 14, as they walked home from a street festival on August 4, 2011. Police say that Caleb was killed when he was trying to protect his younger sister. He was shot in the arm and chest.
On June 5, police said that 34-year-old men Michael I. Wallace and Bobby Gipson had been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder in connection with the killing in 2011.
The department said in a release, “These arrests are a major step toward justice for Caleb Witty and should help his family and friends who have been through years of uncertainty and grief.” “Caleb Witty was a young man who was just trying to have a good time with his sister at the Decatur Celebration.” He was killed for no reason. There are no words to describe how pointless this crime is. His sudden death was a terrible loss that made people who knew him feel empty inside.
The cops told us that they didn’t say why Wallace and Gipson were arrested.
“This case has moved forward thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated law enforcement team, important help from the State Attorney’s office, working together with state and federal agencies, and helpful advice from members of the public,” the department said.
According to jail records, Wallace is being held in Illinois, and Gipson is waiting to be extradited from Tennessee.
It’s not clear right now if either has made a plea.
