Troopers with the Delaware State Police shot and killed a gunman soon after he reportedly killed a staff member at a senior living center in Dover on Tuesday. Police are now looking into what happened.
The incident started at 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday when a 51-year-old man from Camden, Del.—whom police have not released any other information—went to see a female relative who lives at the Harmony at Kent Senior Living Center, which is located in the 1400 block of East Lebanon Road in Dover.
Government officials said the man had been kicked off the land before for what they called “aggressive behavior.”
In a statement, police said a 59-year-old staff member escorted the man and his female relative out of the building. Police have not said anything else about this person.
Officials say that once the man got outside, he punched the worker and then ran to his car in the parking lot and grabbed a gun.
Following this, the man fired one shot into the car of a male cousin who was driving through the parking lot. He then aimed and shot the staff member.
Police say that after the shooting, the man stayed with a female relative near his car in the parking lot until they came.
Then, officials said, state police troopers tried to talk to the gunman but he reportedly raised his gun, which made the troopers fire at him.
The shooter and the staff member were both taken to a nearby hospital, but both of them died from blood loss, according to police.
Officials from the state police said that the troopers who were involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave until the state’s Department of Justice and state police can do a use of force review.
