Police said Monday that a woman died when her SUV was stolen from a hospital and then crashed into the corner of the U.S. attorney’s office building in downtown Washington, D.C.
Assistant Washington Police Chief Darnel Robinson told the media at a briefing that the victim, whose name was not given right away, was in the car at MedStar Washington Hospital Center when another woman got in and drove off. He called the events a “tragedy.”
The event took place around 1:11 p.m. Monday, cops said in a post on X that someone had said an “elderly parent” was in the SUV at the time of the crash.
Police say the SUV hit the building of the U.S. attorney’s office at 6th and D streets NW.
Police officers closely saw the crash through the rearview mirror and saw the driver get out of the car and try to run away, Robinson said. He said that the officer held the driver to question him.
The driver was not named by the police.
Robinson said that investigators were trying to find out if the driver knew that the victim was in the SUV and if the car was running when it was stolen.
He said that the police would talk to the U.S. attorney’s office about possible charges.
