MINNEAPOLIS — Five days ago, a police officer in Minneapolis was killed when he went to a call about a shooting and was helping a man who then shot him in what police are calling an ambush.
The suspected gunman and another person were killed in the shooting in a south Minneapolis area. Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell said that a third person was seriously hurt.
Authorities say that a second cop and a firefighter were also hurt.
The cop who died was named as Jamal Mitchell. He was a father who was going to get married soon. There was a line of police officers outside of Hennepin County Medical Center, where Mitchell was declared dead.
Mayor Jacob Frey said, “The city of Minneapolis lost a hero in police officer Jamal Mitchell.” “This police officer gave his life to protect others and save their lives.” People in Minneapolis will always remember his life, his work, and his name.
The police said Mitchell was praised for his bravery on his third day on the job last year. Last year, the Minneapolis Police Department wrote on Facebook that Mitchell and another cop saved an elderly couple from a house fire. The post said that the police ran inside and rescued the couple before the house caught on fire and burned down.
It was truly heroic of them to move quickly because they stopped this fire from being even worse, Chief Brian O’Hara wrote in the post.
When they went to a call about domestic abuse three months ago, two police officers and a firefighter-paramedic were killed in Burnsville, a suburb of Minneapolis. In that case, a man started shooting from a house where seven kids were. A third police officer was hurt before the man killed himself with a gun.
