PORTLAND, Ore. — In the New York hush money trial, a unanimous jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of all charges. He is now a convicted criminal and is running as a Republican in 2024.
The charges against him for falsifying business records could get him four years in jail. His sentencing is not until July 11. It is unclear, though, if Judge Juan Merchan, who was in charge of the hearing, will decide to act that way.
While the rest of the country reacts to what will be a historic day in U.S. history, leaders in the Northwest have taken to social media.
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley wrote on the same page, “Justice had a good day.”
“The judge has spoken.” “Trump broke the law and tried to hide it with his money, power, and privilege,” Merkley said. “Trump has been shown the door for the first time in his life for his bad behavior.”
As Rep. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon put it, “Donald Trump was found guilty in a court of law by a jury of his peers.” People, even past presidents, must be held responsible for crimes.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal from Washington, D.C., said, “No one is above the law, not even a former president.” Now is a big time for Americans to be responsible.
Rep. Rick Larsen said that the decision on Thursday resulted from the law being applied.
Larsen said, “No one is above the law in the United States.” “The job of our justice system is to find the facts and evidence and decide without bias if a crime happened.”
“Equal justice under the law” is more than just a phrase, according to Rep. Derek Kilmer. It is the basis of America’s justice system and means that no one is above the law, not even a former president.
“Trump broke the law and used his money, power, and privilege to hide the crime,” Rep. Jeff Merkley said. For the first time in his life, Trump has been blamed for what he did. Law and order were good today.
On their Facebook page, the Oregon GOP said that the decision was a “perversion of justice.”
Trump is scheduled to be sentenced just four days before the Republican National Convention in July, where he will be the nominee for the party.
