Police said they found the gator and the woman’s body in Horsepen Bayou in the Greater Houston area.
Police say that the body of a missing Texas woman was found in an alligator’s mouth.
An alligator’s jaws held the body of a woman “believed to be in her 60s,” according to a news statement from the city of Houston. The body was found around 8:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday, May 28.
They also said that the bodies were found while officers were “searching the area” for a woman who had been reported missing.
The alligator was shot and killed by a police sergeant “to prevent it from doing more damage to the remains,” which were found by the department’s dive team.
Officials in the city say that they are still looking into the woman’s death and who she was.
KTRK-TV, an ABC affiliate, claimed that people who know the area where the woman’s body was found said alligators live there.
She told the station, “I know which banks to stay away from and where they like to lay in the sun.” “I’ve never heard of that happening down here before.” It’s a little scary.
Texas Parks and Wildlife says that alligators usually live in lakes, rivers, bayous, and marshes in southern states, “including the eastern third of Texas.” They nest and have babies in Texas from March 1 to May 30 every year.
In Texas, alligator attacks are not common. The animals try to stay away from people, but TPW said that as their population grows, they have had “an increased number of encounters” with people.
