A man wanted in South Carolina was shot and killed by a police officer on New Berlin Road.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said at a news conference Tuesday evening that the man was wanted in South Carolina on several warrants, one for sexual battery.
He was also wanted for cutting someone to death last week in Jacksonville.
Sheriff Waters said that the man was being watched by a task group of U.S. Marshals who found him in Jacksonville.
Around 4:30 p.m., an agent from the JSO saw a car on Oceanway and set up to watch it. After 15 minutes, a man who looked like the wanted man came out of a store nearby. He said that the detective also saw a man driver and what might have been a female passenger get out of the car.
The driver ran away, and the JSO officer went after him. The first suspect was shot and killed by a U.S. Marshal and an officer from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office who were part of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force while the driver was being arrested.
The Action News Jax Ben Ryan was told that the person who was wanted had a gun.
Getting News Jax also told you that one cop was hurt, but we didn’t hear how or what agency the officer works for.
It is now being looked into by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The FDLE told Action News Jax Annette Gutierrez that they would not give any more details because the probe is still going on.
FDLE is only concerned with the killing.
FDLE says that local police are the ones who need to share the suspect’s name.
