Washington, DC – In a statement released on Monday, the senior prosecutor in South Carolina referred to the current hush-money trial against former President Donald Trump as a “travesty of justice.”
During his appearance outside the courthouse in Manhattan, where Donald Trump is currently being tried for allegedly attempting to meddle with the 2016 election by falsifying company records, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson referred to the event as “a sham trial.”
Wilson (R) stated, “What we are witnessing today is the prosecution of a person because of who he is, not what he is alleged to have done,” while counterprotesters shouted over him. “What is taking place right now is a complete and utter violation of the principles of justice. They are not paying attention to the rule of law.
In the past week, a large number of Republican leaders have gathered in New York to show their support for the former president. Wilson, along with a few other elected officials, is the most recent in a line of politicians who have reached out to him.
His presence also occurred at the same time as the attorneys for Donald Trump were finishing up their cross-examination of Michael Cohen, the star witness for the prosecution. Cohen disclosed on Monday that he stole from the Trump Organization when he was working as the company’s lawyer on behalf of the former president.
“He has lied to Congress, he has lied to the organization, and he has lied to the media. “The court has been misled by him,” Wilson reprimanded. After entering a guilty plea in 2018 to charges of campaign finance and lying to Congress, Cohen was given a sentence of three years in prison because of his actions.
“So as a prosecutor, as someone who has spent his entire career defending the rule of law, upholding victims’ rights, and trying to defend the system of justice this country is built on, I’m up here to show my support not only for President Trump but also for the judicial system,” Wilson said, adding that he “chosen” to attend rather than being asked to do so without being asked.
Wilson, who is considered to be a possible candidate for the position of governor of South Carolina in 2026, has been a persistent ally of the former president. He supported Trump in the Republican presidential primary challenge against Nikki Haley, who had previously served as governor of South Carolina.
In the month of September 2023, he accompanied President Trump on a visit at the Palmetto State Armory. This was in advance of the previous president’s rally in Summerville, which he also attended.
A representative for Wilson’s office made the statement that his campaign account was used to cover all of the expenses that were related with the trip.
