In a possible hint at his running mate, Donald Trump said something similar to something that Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) has said many times in support of school choice.
The former president called parental rights the “civil rights issue of our time” in a Wednesday post on Truth Social. This belief has been at the heart of Scott’s political career.
During his failed run for the GOP presidential nomination, voters learned about Scott’s view that education is the key to the American dream. The South Carolina senator ran his campaign on the story of his own life, often talking about how a good education helped him get out of generations of poverty.
After getting a big boost from an old enemy in January, Trump has said many times that Scott is on his shortlist for vice president.
It was in January that Scott, co-chairman of the Congressional School Choice Caucus, said “quality education” is the “greatest civil rights issue of our time.” He said that at a gathering for National School Choice Week.
Some polls show that more and more African American voters are getting fed up with the Democratic Party and switching their votes to Trump. Scott could be a great way for Trump to grow his support because he is the only black Republican in the Senate.
Scott just started a new video series called “Roundtable.” It features a group of black Republican lawmakers who talk about minority problems from a conservative point of view. Aside from this start, Republicans are also trying to get African American voters to switch their votes from the Democrats to the GOP so they can win the 2024 election.
In an interview with Meet the Press at the start of May, Scott said he thought Trump would name his running mate by early July.
