Euclid, OH: According to officials, an Ohio police officer was “ambushed” and shot while responding to a call about a disturbance over the weekend.
Police in Euclid, a suburb of Cleveland, said they were called to a home just before 10 p.m. Saturday because of a noise report.
“While police were investigating, a gunman ambushed an officer and shot him,” the police said. Police say the cop was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.
Nexstar’s WJW reported that the accused shooter, who was named Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, is also dead. Police tracked him to a house in Shaker Heights on Sunday afternoon. After a struggle, they found him dead inside the house.
Police said the man had a lot of weapons on him. It’s still not clear how the man died.
Attorney General Dave Yost of Ohio said the officer who was killed was 23-year-old Jacob Derbin and that he had only been with the police force for a year.
While we are getting ready to honour our dead heroes during Police Memorial Week, a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day. This is a cruel irony, Yost said in a statement. “This is so unfair to the family of this young officer and to the Euclid Police Department. It makes my heart hurt.”
Early Sunday morning, Euclid police asked people to “keep the fallen officer, his family, loved ones, and our agency in your thoughts and prayers.”
“He was a wonderful person.” Just a good heart. Had a beautiful smile. “He makes the world a better place,” said Scott Meyer, the chief of police in Euclid.
We are dealing with a deep sense of sadness and shock, Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail said in a statement on Sunday. “Not only to honour a hero who selflessly served and protected us, but also to offer strength to each other in this time of grief,” the mayor asked the people of the city.
