Woman Killed in Shark Attack While Swimming Off St. Croix Beach

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands – A woman vacationing in the U.S. Virgin Islands died after being attacked by a shark while swimming near a popular beach on St. Croix, according to local reports and island officials.

Shark Attack Reported Near Dorsch Beach

The incident occurred just off the coast of Dorsch Beach on the afternoon of Jan. 8, around 4:30 p.m. Witnesses told St. Thomas Source that they heard shrieking coming from the water and quickly realized a swimmer was in distress.

A Good Samaritan rushed into the water to assist Arlene Lillis, 56, who had been swimming roughly 10 yards from shore when the attack occurred. Witnesses reported seeing a large pool of blood around the victim and said her arm had been bitten off below the elbow.

Emergency Response and Death Confirmed

Several bystanders helped pull Lillis from the water while others contacted emergency services. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where officials later confirmed she died from injuries consistent with a shark attack.

Authorities launched a search and rescue operation after receiving reports of a possible second victim. However, the Virgin Islands Police Department later said it could not confirm that another swimmer was missing.

Shark Attacks Rare in the U.S. Virgin Islands

While shark encounters are considered common in the waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands, actual attacks remain extremely rare. Data from the International Shark Attack File shows only four confirmed shark attacks in the territory since 1749.

Witnesses did not see the shark involved in the attack. Marine experts note that the warm waters off Dorsch Beach are home to several shark species, though encounters resulting in injury are unusual.

Governor Issues Statement

USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr. released a statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and gratitude to those who tried to help.

“Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the victim, and with everyone who witnessed this tragedy,” Bryan said. “We are grateful to the bystanders who acted immediately to render aid and to the first responders who worked urgently and bravely in an effort to save her life.”

Investigation Ongoing

Officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. No beach closures or additional safety advisories have been announced as of now, but authorities urge swimmers and visitors to remain aware of their surroundings while entering open waters.
