Mother of 13-Year-Old Killed in New Haven Police Chase Speaks Out “He Didn’t Deserve to Die”

New Haven, Conn. – The mother of a 13-year-old boy who was killed after crashing a vehicle police say was stolen is speaking publicly about her grief and unanswered questions following the fatal incident in New Haven. In an exclusive interview with WTNH, the boy’s mother said she believes her son made a mistake but did not deserve to lose his life.

Crash Happened During Early-Morning Police Pursuit

The crash occurred early Sunday morning along Whalley Avenue while two cruisers from the New Haven Police Department were pursuing a vehicle authorities say had been stolen.

Police have not released full details about how long the pursuit lasted or what led up to the crash. Investigators confirmed that the incident resulted in the death of two juveniles who were inside the vehicle.

Mother Questions Why the Chase Was Not Called Off

The boy’s mother, Jen Baker, identified her son as 13-year-old Marshall Curry. She acknowledged that her son may have stolen the car and said he should have faced consequences for that decision. However, she questioned why officers did not end the pursuit.

“I know my son, and he got scared,” Baker said. “I love him and I am proud of him. I just wish he didn’t get in that car. I wish he came home. I just want him to know I love him.”

Her comments reflect broader concerns often raised in cases involving police pursuits and young suspects.

Family Describes Marshall Curry as a Good Student

Baker said her son had never been in trouble before and was doing well in school, earning mostly As and Bs. She described him as a good kid who made a single bad choice.

She said peer pressure may have played a role and shared what she wishes she could tell her son now.

“I know the peer pressure is hard, and I know you want to fit in and I know you want to be seen — but you are seen, just be yourself,” Baker said.

Second Juvenile Also Killed in the Crash

Authorities confirmed that a girl who was also inside the vehicle was killed in the crash. Her name and age have not been released as of now.

No information has been made public regarding how long the pursuit lasted or whether body camera footage exists.

Investigation Ongoing

The crash and police pursuit remain under investigation by the Connecticut State Police. Officials have not yet announced whether any policy reviews or disciplinary actions are being considered.

State police say more information will be released once the investigation is complete.
