Barrackville, WV – An 82-year-old woman from Barrackville is behind bars after authorities say she exposed multiple juveniles to dangerous narcotics, including methamphetamine and fentanyl, in a case that has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about child safety.
Investigation Uncovers Alleged Drug Exposure to Minors
According to reports, Mary Kennedy, 82, was taken into custody following an investigation into allegations that minors were using controlled substances inside a residence where Kennedy served as a caretaker.
Deputies reportedly responded to the home on December 5 after receiving information that juveniles were actively using drugs at the location. Authorities were told that Kennedy was responsible for some of the children and was also allowing other juveniles to stay at the home, according to a criminal complaint cited by WTRF.
Five Teens Found Inside the Home
Law enforcement officials say that five teenagers were present inside the residence when deputies arrived. Reports indicate that two of the juveniles were in Kennedy’s custody, while the remaining three were visiting.
The investigation was conducted with assistance from Child Protective Services (CPS) as part of a truancy-related inquiry, which ultimately led authorities to uncover drugs inside the home.
Meth and Fentanyl Found Under Bed
During a search of the residence, deputies reportedly discovered methamphetamine and fentanyl hidden beneath Kennedy’s bed, according to WDTV. Authorities believe Kennedy had purchased the methamphetamine for her own use, but said the juveniles had been taking drugs from her container.
Investigators also located a pill bottle labeled with Kennedy’s name that allegedly contained methamphetamine and tested positive for fentanyl. Officials say the presence of fentanyl significantly elevated the danger, as even small amounts of the drug can be fatal, particularly to young users.
Kennedy Allegedly Admitted Drugs Were Hers
According to court documents cited by local media, Kennedy confirmed that the drugs belonged to her when questioned by law enforcement.
During the interview, authorities say Kennedy admitted that she purchased methamphetamine, used some herself, and sold the remainder to a juvenile living in the home. Investigators also reportedly found a Twisted Tea box containing marijuana inside the residence.
Serious Charges Filed
Following the investigation, Mary Kennedy was arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses, including:
- Possession with intent to deliver fentanyl and methamphetamine
- Child neglect (five counts)
Authorities emphasized that exposing minors to narcotics—especially substances as potent as fentanyl—poses extreme and life-threatening risks.
Bond Set at $100,000
Kennedy was transported to the North Central Regional Jail, where she is currently being held on a $100,000 bond. Court proceedings are expected to determine how the case will move forward and whether additional charges may be filed.
