Nashville, TN – A man who was forced into the trunk of a car at gunpoint outside a Citgo gas station managed to call 911 from inside the vehicle, helping police capture the alleged kidnapper and rescue both victims, according to investigators.
Police said the disturbing broad-daylight attack unfolded behind the Citgo at 701 Dickerson Pike, where 41-year-old Jericco McFarland allegedly held two men at gunpoint, fired multiple shots, and forced them into the trunk of a white Ford Fusion. The victims, ages 18 and 26, were assaulted, robbed, and transported nearly a mile before officers intercepted the car.
What Police Say Happened
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the incident began around 4:45 p.m. on November 16 when the two victims were confronted outside the gas station. Investigators said McFarland fired several shots during the confrontation, with one bullet grazing one victim’s left leg and exiting through his shoe.
The men were then reportedly forced into the vehicle trunk at gunpoint. While locked inside, one of the victims quietly called 911, giving dispatchers enough information for officers to track their approximate location.
Attack Continues on Lischey Avenue
Police said McFarland drove about a mile to Lischey Avenue, where he stopped, opened the trunk, and confronted the victims again — this time accompanied by a second armed suspect.
Investigators reported that both gunmen pistol-whipped the victims and stole multiple items, including a necklace and even one victim’s pants. While the suspects carried out the robbery, officers were already closing in thanks to the ongoing emergency call.
As police arrived, both attackers fled on foot, leaving the injured victims in the trunk. Officers quickly rescued them and secured the scene.
Evidence, Video, and Identification
Detectives later obtained surveillance footage showing the alleged kidnapping and assault. Both victims identified McFarland as their attacker during a photo lineup.
Authorities said the incident does not appear to be random, though additional details about motive were not released.
The second armed suspect remains unidentified.
Arrest Made in Grocery Store Parking Lot
On Tuesday, detectives spotted McFarland in a grocery store parking lot and moved in to arrest him. A loaded revolver was found inside the vehicle he was driving, police said.
McFarland, described as an ex-convict with prior drug-related offenses, is now charged with:
- Aggravated kidnapping (2 counts)
- Aggravated robbery (2 counts)
- Felon in possession of a firearm
He was booked into jail on a $202,500 bond.
Ongoing Investigation
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department continues to search for the second gunman involved in the attack. Officers also urged community members to provide any information that might help identify the additional suspect.
Community Safety Concerns
The case has sparked worry among local residents due to the nature of the attack — a violent confrontation occurring in a public place during daylight hours. Police reiterated the importance of remaining aware of surroundings and reporting suspicious activity immediately.
Conclusion
The quick actions of the victim who called 911 from the trunk, combined with rapid police response, likely prevented further harm and led to the arrest of the primary suspect. As detectives continue their investigation, they are asking anyone with information about the unidentified second gunman to contact authorities.
