CINCINNATI, OH – A 13-year-old boy from Fairfax, Ohio, spent months planning a brutal killing before strangling his 64-year-old neighbor, Sheila “Denise” Tenpenny, to death — and later bragging about the crime online, according to prosecutors.
The disturbing case, which has stunned law enforcement and the community alike, reveals how the young teen used the internet, including ChatGPT, to research how to pick victims, strangle them, and evade police questioning before carrying out the premeditated attack.
Months of Chilling Planning Before the Attack
Authorities say the teen meticulously plotted the murder for months, asking online tools and chat platforms questions such as “how to choose the perfect victim” and “how to defeat a police interrogation.”
On the morning of February 2, 2024, Tenpenny was asleep inside her home on the 3900 block of Germania Street in the Cincinnati suburb of Fairfax when the boy broke in. Investigators say he struck her repeatedly, inflicting blunt-force trauma, before strangling her to death.
Despite the attack, Tenpenny fought back fiercely. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office said evidence from the scene showed signs of a struggle — including the teen’s DNA under the victim’s fingernails and his blood drops throughout the home.
‘This One Was a Fighter’: Bragging Online After the Murder
After killing Tenpenny, prosecutors say the boy went online and posted a chilling message to his social media account: “This one was a fighter.”
Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation Agent David Ward said that in over two decades of investigating violent crimes, he has never seen a case like this involving someone so young.
“To add to that the premeditation of the offense is just chilling to me,” Ward told local media. “As the investigation continued, his social media messages revealed several other communications that were very disturbing.”
Authorities say the boy made multiple mistakes at the scene — including leaving DNA and attempting to clean up with materials that only made the evidence more obvious.
The Guilty Plea and Sentencing
The teen, now 14 years old, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, and strangulation this week as part of a plea agreement. Because of his age, his name has not been publicly released.
Under the terms of the plea deal, he will remain in the custody of the Ohio Department of Youth Services until he turns 21, which is the maximum sentence a juvenile can serve within the state’s youth system.
Ward expressed concern about the teen’s apparent lack of remorse and his capability to “learn from mistakes” in future offenses, describing the entire situation as “deeply unsettling.”
Remembering Sheila “Denise” Tenpenny
Friends and neighbors have remembered Sheila “Denise” Tenpenny as a “beacon of light” in the Fairfax community. Her obituary described her as someone who “touched the lives of many with her kind heart, unwavering resilience, and exceptional humor.”
Her family and friends continue to mourn her loss, saying her legacy will live on through “valuable lessons and unforgettable memories” shared among those who loved her.
A Case That Raises Alarming Questions
The case has sparked widespread concern about youth access to violent online content and the growing influence of AI tools and social media in shaping harmful behaviour. Law enforcement experts have called for stronger digital safeguards and parental awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities continue to analyse the boy’s online communications to determine whether others may have encouraged or influenced his actions.
