South Bend, IN — Police in South Bend issued warnings to drivers Friday evening after near-whiteout conditions developed across the city, causing multiple crashes and dangerously slick roads.
According to the South Bend Police Department, officers first reported rapidly worsening visibility and accumulating snow around 6:10 p.m. as a burst of heavy snow swept through the region.
“Near-whiteout conditions” were observed across several parts of the city, the department said in an alert to residents, noting that road conditions deteriorated within minutes.
Rapid Snowfall Creates Travel Hazards
The snowfall quickly blanketed streets, leading to multiple collisions and slide-offs citywide. Police urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to drive with extreme caution if already on the road.
Local authorities said crews were dispatched to treat and clear priority routes as conditions worsened. Temperatures remained below freezing, increasing the risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces.
