Orvis to Close 40 Locations in Response to Rising Tariffs

Sunderland, VT — One of the country’s oldest outdoor retailers, Orvis, has announced plans to close nearly 40 locations due to the impact of rising tariff costs. The company, which has been in business for 169 years, will shut down 31 retail stores and five outlet locations, marking a significant shift for the iconic brand.

Orvis President Simon Perkins explained the move will begin a “new chapter” for the company and allow a “more focused retail store portfolio.” The decision comes amid what Perkins described as an “unprecedented tariff landscape” that has forced the company to reevaluate its business model.

“In order for Orvis to ensure a durable brand and model for decades to come, we are focusing on our core strengths and making the difficult but necessary decision to rescale the business by tightening our assortment and reducing our corporate store footprint,” Perkins told Fox Business.

A Rich History with a New Future

Founded in 1856, Orvis has kept its headquarters in Sunderland, Vermont, for over 160 years. The company boasts a legacy of providing high-end outdoor gear and apparel, specializing in fishing, hunting, and other outdoor experiences.

Despite the closure of several physical locations, Orvis continues to have a significant presence with more than 550 domestic independent dealers and partnerships with several national outdoor retailers.

Investing in Key Areas Amid Challenges

Orvis’ decision to scale back its retail footprint is driven by rising tariffs and shifting market conditions. The company plans to invest more in areas it sees growth potential, such as gear, apparel, outdoor experiences, and conservation efforts.

“It’s about ensuring Orvis continues to lead in innovation, serve our angling and upland communities, and protect the wild places we love,” Perkins added.

While the company phases out some older products, Orvis has committed to keeping its focus on innovation and expanding in areas that align with its core strengths.

Special Savings for Fans

In a bit of good news for loyal customers, Orvis will be offering special savings on “Last Release” styles that are being phased out, as well as substantial discounts at closing locations.

“We want to ensure our fans continue to have access to the Orvis products they love at a great value,” Perkins said.

Looking Ahead for Orvis

As Orvis moves forward with this transition, the company is focusing on its legacy while adjusting to new challenges in the retail landscape. Perkins emphasized that the changes are necessary to secure the company’s future and continue providing high-quality products to its loyal customers.
