Wheelchair-Bound Man Forced to Slide Down Stairs to Escape Violent Attack by Ex-Girlfriend in Tennessee

Chattanooga, TN – A woman wanted by authorities for allegedly assaulting her ex-boyfriend, who is wheelchair-bound, has been arrested. Taneshia Gearing, 29, was taken into custody on Friday by the Chattanooga Police Department after a warrant was issued for her arrest on charges of domestic assault and vandalism. She has since posted bond and was released from jail. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in June 2024.

Alleged Attack on Wheelchair-Bound Man

According to an arrest affidavit, the incident began on June 25, 2024, when Gearing broke into the home of her ex-boyfriend by kicking through a locked door. The man, who remains unnamed, told police that Gearing immediately began to shout at him before ransacking his apartment. During the altercation, he attempted to escape by sliding down a flight of stairs after getting out of his wheelchair.

Despite the man’s efforts to escape, Gearing allegedly pursued him, continuing to assault him. The man reported that she threw a phone at his face, causing a cut beneath his eye. Gearing also reportedly ripped off his shirt and began beating him with her fists before fleeing the scene.

Police Findings and Witness Account

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man, who declined medical assistance, despite having visible injuries. They also offered support from a domestic violence advocate, but the man chose to decline the offer. Inside the apartment, police discovered a baseball bat and two broken TV sets, which were consistent with the man’s account of the attack. A witness to the incident corroborated his statements.

Charges and Court Date

Taneshia Gearing was charged with domestic assault and vandalism/malicious mischief. Following her arrest, she posted bond and was released from custody. Her next court appearance is scheduled for November 12, 2025.
