WALDORF, MD – An 18-year-old Maryland teen, Sean Smith, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly plunging a kitchen knife into his stepfather’s chest during a physical altercation in their garage last Friday. Police report the teen told officers he was provoked and acted in response to being punched by the 45-year-old victim, Damian Hodges.
Fatal Altercation in Waldorf Home
Authorities responded at approximately 8:43 p.m. to the 9700 block of Orkney Place after receiving a 911 call from Smith, who admitted to stabbing his stepfather.
Upon arrival, police found Hodges with multiple stab wounds. Despite attempts by officers and EMS to save him, Hodges died on the scene, according to a police press release.
Teen Claims He Was Provoked
According to court documents obtained by Southern Maryland News Net, Smith told police that Hodges struck him multiple times with a closed fist, prompting him to retreat and retrieve a knife from the kitchen located above the garage.
Smith allegedly displayed the knife to Hodges, who reportedly said, “You’re not going to use that knife.” Smith claimed Hodges punched him again, which prompted the teen to stab him once in the chest before disposing of the knife in a trash can.
Witness Account Confirms Altercation
A woman in the home, who has not been publicly identified, told investigators she witnessed both Smith and Hodges fighting in the garage. Court documents state that the teen approached Hodges while holding the knife and wrestled with him before stabbing him.
Investigators recovered the knife from a trash can and confirmed it was the weapon used in the fatal attack.
