Evansville, IN – A 12-year-old girl’s death has led to a criminal conviction for her father, highlighting the dangers of neglecting serious medical conditions in children.
Father Found Legally Responsible
Brent Bredhold, 39, of Vanderburgh County, was convicted this week on one count of neglect of a dependent causing death. The jury ruled that his failure to properly care for his daughter directly contributed to her passing. Bredhold now faces up to 40 years in prison.
Tragic Death of Alice Bredhold
The victim, Alice Bredhold, was found deceased in her bedroom on July 4, 2024, at the family home on South New York Avenue, Evansville. Investigators confirmed she had Type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition that requires consistent monitoring and treatment.
Vanderburgh County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Winston Lin said,
“This is a heartbreaking case where a 12-year-old girl with Type 1 diabetes was left to fend for herself until her untimely death. Her parents should have been her strongest advocates, but unfortunately all they had to offer was apathy, indifference, and neglect.”
Evidence of Neglect
Records show Alice frequently experienced dangerously high blood sugar readings while at school. A school nurse documented 44 readings above 300 and 14 readings above 600 in the weeks before her death. For context, blood sugar levels above 180 two hours after a meal are considered elevated according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The prosecution argued that Bredhold failed to manage his daughter’s condition, even after multiple hospitalizations since she was 10 and professional guidance from a pediatric psychologist. Prosecutor Lin emphasized,
“Kids don’t understand the value of daily routines. With Type 1 diabetes, it is critical.”
Witness Testimonies
During the trial, witnesses from law enforcement, school staff, and family members provided testimony. Investigators noted the presence of diabetes management items at the home, including test strips, insulin pumps, injection pens, and related supplies. However, the father reportedly did not engage in his daughter’s care on the day of her death.
Defense Arguments
Bredhold’s attorney, Dawnya Taylor, argued her client was often away due to his railroad job, which required multi-day travel. She also disputed the state’s portrayal of him as the sole caregiver, noting Alice’s mother, Ashley Marie Bredhold, shared parental responsibility. Ashley’s trial is scheduled for February 2026.
Remembering Alice
Alice was described as artistic, creative, and outgoing. She played cello at Evans Elementary School, was an avid reader, and participated in a local book club. Friends and family remembered her for her friendly and energetic spirit, as noted in her obituary.
Next Steps
Brent Bredhold is set to be sentenced on October 23, 2025. The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of failing to provide proper medical care for children.
