Duluth, MN – Northern Minnesota residents are being urged to prepare for gusty winds and unsettled weather from late Saturday through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Strong Winds Expected Across the Region
Forecasters report that winds will be strongest on Sunday, with gusts reaching 35 mph or higher across much of the Duluth area. The NWS noted that a Wind Advisory may be issued if conditions worsen, potentially impacting both road travel and outdoor activities.
Along Lake Superior, a Gale Watch has been posted for the North Shore, warning of hazardous marine conditions. Boaters are strongly advised to monitor the forecasts and avoid travel if possible.
Scattered Rain and Isolated Thunderstorms
Scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop Saturday night and continue into Sunday. While most precipitation will be light, some areas could experience brief, heavier thunderstorms. Temperatures are forecast to remain above average this weekend, before cooling to near-normal levels early next week.
Dangerous Conditions on Lake Superior
The marine forecast highlights particularly dangerous conditions Sunday, with peak gusts ranging from 30 to 40 mph across western Lake Superior. Areas near Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors could see significant wind impacts, creating risky travel situations for boats.
Return to Calmer Conditions
After the system moves through, forecasters expect a return to calmer and cooler conditions beginning Monday, offering relief from the weekend’s gusty winds and stormy weather.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest NWS forecasts and take necessary precautions to stay safe both on land and on Lake Superior.
