Palmer, AK – A tragic case in Alaska has left the community in shock after a 4-year-old girl under the care of a local couple died of a brain injury, leading to multiple criminal charges against the adults responsible.
Arrests and Charges
Sergie Krukoff, 46, and Jackie Caswell, 47, were arrested by Alaska State Police on Saturday after going into hiding following their indictment on several felony charges. Caswell faces second-degree murder, criminally negligent homicide, and endangering the welfare of a child, while Krukoff was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.
The couple was initially indicted after a grand jury returned a true bill on Sept. 25. Caswell’s bail was set at $300,000, while Krukoff is in jail on $35,000, plus $1,000 in connection with a previous 2018 case of criminal non-support. Both are scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 14.
Investigation Details
The investigation began in August after the child’s death, which was ruled a homicide. Police said a teenager living in the same home came forward, revealing that Caswell and Krukoff had been starving the girl and instructing the teenager to lie about the circumstances.
According to court testimony, Caswell was seen slapping and hitting the child, and the teenager would secretly bring the girl food. The Alaska State Police first encountered the family on Aug. 11, when officers responded to a call and found the girl being treated with CPR. She was transported to the hospital and later succumbed to her injuries on Aug. 24.
Community and Court Reaction
During their court appearance, Palmer County District Attorney Trina Sears highlighted the severity of the abuse and the need for justice for the young victim. The case has raised concerns about child welfare oversight in the community and the measures taken to protect vulnerable children.
Background and Legal Proceedings
Caswell and Krukoff had gone into hiding following their indictment, but were located in Wasilla on Saturday. Caswell’s charges carry serious penalties, including decades in prison if convicted, while Krukoff faces significant consequences for child endangerment.
Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the abuse, and the case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of reporting and monitoring child welfare concerns.
Safety and Awareness for Communities
Officials urge families and neighbors to remain vigilant and report any signs of child abuse or neglect. Early intervention can prevent tragedies like this and ensure children receive the protection they need.
