Holbrook, NY – A Long Island couple was arrested after authorities discovered enough fentanyl to kill more than 42,000 people in what officials called one of the largest drug busts in Suffolk County history. The pair also had unregistered firearms, bulletproof vests, and “dragon’s breath” shotgun shells in their home.
Massive Drug Seizure Details
Caleb Moran and Jessica Medina-Rivas, both 28, were charged with 56 counts of the highest-level narcotics offenses in New York State. During an Aug. 22 raid, police found:
- 14 kilos of cocaine
- 12 kilos of methamphetamine
- 3 ounces of fentanyl
- Black tar heroin
- 20 pounds of cannabis
- Thousands of pills
In addition, investigators recovered:
- Two unregistered guns
- Bulletproof vests
- Blenders, digital scales, pill press, and packaging equipment
- More than $118,000 in cash
- “Dragon’s breath” ammo, which produces sparks when fired
“This wasn’t just a drug bust. It was a ticking time bomb sitting in the middle of a quiet neighborhood,” said Suffolk DA Ray Tierney as the suspects were arraigned on $2 million bail each.
How the Operation Was Uncovered
The investigation revealed that the couple sold over 2 ounces of cocaine at a time and various amounts of fentanyl to an undercover detective on five occasions over the summer. During one transaction, Moran reportedly warned the officer not to sell fentanyl “pure”, admitting it had already caused overdoses, including a fatality.
Authorities said Moran suggested using soap shavings to cut the lethal drug and stretch the product.
“Two million dollars in product — among the largest seizures in Suffolk history,” said County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina.
“The scale of this alleged operation is almost incomprehensible.”
Additional Seizures and Family Connections
Investigators also discovered about 80 pounds of cannabis at a Patchogue motor sports business operated by Moran’s father. While he was not charged, police intercepted subsequent UPS shipments of weed from California to the shop.
Lawyer Raymond Perini, representing Moran, confirmed that his client’s father cooperated fully and is not suspected of wrongdoing.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Both Moran and Medina-Rivas pleaded not guilty to Operating as a Major Trafficker, New York’s top narcotics charge, as well as multiple counts of possession and sales.
- Bail: $2 million each / $8 million bond
- Potential Sentence: 15 years to life if convicted
- Upcoming Court Dates: Medina-Rivas – Oct. 27, Moran – Oct. 28
DA Tierney stated that the investigation remains active and more charges could be filed depending on new findings.
Community and Safety Context
Authorities stressed the danger posed by highly potent fentanyl, which can cause fatal overdoses with minimal exposure. Residents in the area are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Conclusion
This arrest highlights the ongoing opioid crisis in Long Island and the scale of local narcotics operations. With fentanyl quantities capable of killing tens of thousands and additional illegal arms discovered, officials are emphasizing public safety and continued law enforcement vigilance.
