Mobile, AL – Mobile police concluded a three-month drug crackdown in the Campground Historic District and surrounding neighborhoods, resulting in 45 arrests and over $12,000 in cash seized. Authorities say the operation, called Operation Campfire, targeted street-level dealers as well as larger networks.

During the crackdown, Mobile Police served 17 search and arrest warrants with SWAT teams, K-9 units, and officers swarming suspected drug houses. WKRG News 5 reported that journalists were allowed to ride along for two days to observe the operation.
“SWAT does entry; these guys basically wait until everything is secure, and then they’ll go in and start their investigation,” said Captain Matthew James of the Mobile Police Department.
Police emphasized that the goal of Operation Campfire was not just street-level arrests but also to dismantle larger drug networks in collaboration with federal agencies.
Collaboration With Federal Agencies
Mobile police worked closely with the DEA, ATF, and HSI during the operation. Captain James explained:
“We work not just with the DEA on drug stuff. We work with the ATF, HSI…the ATF mainly because inherently dealing with narcotics, you will find a lot of guns.”
The multi-agency approach helped authorities identify connections between local suspects and larger criminal networks.
Community Cooperation and Engagement
Police stressed the importance of community support in combating crime.
“20% of the population commits 80% of the crime is absolutely true, particularly individuals that are involved in stuff…even we can’t make arrests without witnesses cooperating,” said Captain James.
Despite the seriousness of the raids, officers also engaged positively with residents, helping neighbors and even giving a dog some water to cool off.

The 45 people arrested faced charges ranging from drug possession to trafficking. Officers also confiscated more than $12,000 in cash from suspects’ homes and vehicles. Authorities say the operation sends a message that Mobile police are committed to removing dangerous drugs from the community.
