Indianapolis, IN – An Indiana man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, with two years suspended, for kidnapping his girlfriend and her young children before embarking on a violent spree from Elkhart to Indianapolis, authorities said.
Dhantori Honorable was sentenced in Marion County on Wednesday, Sept. 10, after pleading guilty in July to multiple serious charges, including kidnapping with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon, kidnapping a child under 14, criminal recklessness, domestic battery in front of a child, domestic battery of a child, auto theft, and resisting law enforcement.
Crime Spree Begins in Elkhart
The alleged series of crimes started on Jan. 17, 2024, when Honorable reportedly shot his 61-year-old grandfather in Elkhart. He is still awaiting trial for that shooting along with several other northern Indiana crimes.
Shortly after the shooting, Honorable allegedly forced his girlfriend and her two children — a 7-year-old girl and a 7-month-old baby, neither his own — into a car at gunpoint. The woman said Honorable repeatedly hit her and fired his handgun at least 30 times while driving to Indianapolis.
Danger at Gas Stations
Upon reaching Indianapolis, Honorable reportedly forced his girlfriend to enter a gas station to buy alcohol and cigarillos. He allegedly told her to “sell herself” to get the money. When she returned, Honorable attempted to throw the 7-month-old baby out of the car seat and tried to yank the 7-year-old girl out through the rear passenger window. When unable to remove the child, he pointed a gun at her head and fired, missing.
Honorable then ordered the mother to abandon her 7-year-old at the gas station, leaving the child sobbing in the parking lot. The woman later returned to retrieve her daughter after driving away briefly from Honorable’s control.
Stolen Vehicle and Continued Threats
After forcing his girlfriend to take him to a Chase bank, she eventually sped away, leaving him behind to protect herself and her child. Honorable then went to the home of an ex-girlfriend, pounding on the door and firing an estimated 11 shots through it, though no one inside was injured.
Police located the 7-year-old girl at the first gas station, where she ran into her mother’s arms. While officers were speaking with the mother and child, Honorable arrived in a stolen van and reportedly told police, “I’ll die before I tell you who I am.”
Arrest and Restraint
Honorable resisted arrest, kicking and struggling against officers, who eventually placed him in arm and leg restraints and secured him in a police vehicle.
The Marion County sentencing concludes a harrowing case of domestic violence, kidnapping, and firearm crimes, highlighting the severity of his offenses and the courage of the victims in surviving the ordeal.
Takeaway
This case underscores the danger posed by armed offenders and the importance of swift police response. Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report any threats to local authorities immediately.
