Teen Sentenced to 50 Years for Murdering Friend, Injuring Another in Texas

Friendswood, TX – An 18-year-old man who admitted he “wanted to commit a homicide for a long time” was sentenced to 50 years in prison after killing one friend and critically injuring another just days before Christmas in Galveston County.

Crime Overview

Connor Lynn Hilton, 18, pleaded guilty to the murder of 18-year-old Ethan Riley and the shooting of 19-year-old Benjamin Bliek on December 23, 2023. The incident occurred when Riley and Bliek visited Hilton’s home in Friendswood to see his newly acquired firearm.

While showing the gun, Hilton shot both friends in the head. Riley died from his injuries, while Bliek survived after spending months in intensive care and rehabilitation.

Victims’ Families Speak

During sentencing, Benjamin Bliek confronted Hilton directly.

“Stop sniveling. Stop crying. You did this to yourself. Secondly, the grief you have caused the Rileys and my own family, I will never forgive you. Pucker your butt cheeks,” Bliek said, according to video coverage.

Riley’s father, Matthew Riley, also addressed the court:

“He’s a beautiful soul, full of love and light. You can see that light in his eyes and hear it in his laughter.”

Failed Defense Attempt

Hilton had planned to use a defense claiming his Accutane medication caused psychosis at the time of the shootings. However, the court rejected expert testimony, preventing this argument from proceeding at trial.

Police Investigation

Authorities received a 911 call from a witness who heard two gunshots inside Hilton’s home. The individual barricaded themselves in a bathroom and reported hearing Hilton crying afterward:

“What have I done?”

Police found Hilton outside, “visibly distraught,” and he admitted two teenagers were inside.

Inside the home, officers discovered Riley and Bliek lying on the floor, both shot in the head. A revolver with a teal handle was found nearby. Hilton reportedly told police he had persuaded his mother to buy the firearm.

Hilton’s Confession

During a police interview, Hilton confessed in detail about the shootings. He stated:

  • He shot Riley first in the left side of the head.
  • He then shot Bliek in the left side of the head, observing Bliek raise his hands defensively.
  • There was no dispute or argument prior to the shooting; the act was premeditated.

“Hilton stated that he fully understands what he had done and that he should be held accountable,” police noted.

Legal Proceedings

Initially, Hilton was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with bodily injury and booked with a $1 million bond, which he posted. Following Riley’s death, the murder charge was upgraded, and Hilton was rearrested. He eventually pleaded guilty, resulting in the 50-year prison sentence.

Community Reaction

The Friendswood community and families of the victims have expressed deep shock and grief. Officials emphasize the danger of firearms in the hands of minors and urge residents to report any signs of potential violence.

Conclusion

This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of premeditated violence among youths. With Hilton serving a lengthy prison term, families hope for some measure of justice and safety in the community.
