Paterson, NJ – Authorities have charged a Paterson couple in connection with the death of a 4-year-old girl in May, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Arrests and Charges
Ashanti Givens and Givenchy Stewart, both 21 years old, were indicted for their roles in the child’s death. Stewart, the girl’s father, and Givens allegedly left the child unattended in an apartment for an extended period on May 5 and May 6.
Following an autopsy, officials said Givens caused blunt force trauma, which contributed to the girl’s death. As a result, both Givens and Stewart face first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and hindering prosecution charges.
Details of the Case
According to prosecutors, the child was left unsupervised for multiple hours, placing her at serious risk of injury. Investigators allege the fatal injuries were not accidental and stemmed from intentional acts by Givens.
Authorities are currently reviewing all evidence and interviewing witnesses as the investigation continues. Court dates and bail information for the couple have not yet been released.
Community Reaction and Safety Concerns
The death has raised concerns in Paterson about child safety and parental supervision. Officials urge caregivers to report any signs of child abuse or neglect immediately.
“The loss of a young life is devastating, and our office will pursue justice for this child,” said the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office in a statement.
Residents are reminded that even brief periods of neglect can have fatal consequences, and community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any concerns to local authorities.
Next Steps
The case is ongoing, and updates will be provided as authorities continue their investigation. Givens and Stewart are expected to appear in court to answer the charges, with prosecutors seeking accountability for the death of this 4-year-old child.
