Bloomington, IL – An Illinois man has been arrested for allegedly giving his girlfriend abortion-inducing medication without her consent, resulting in a miscarriage, authorities said.
Alleged Administration of Abortion Drug
According to the Bloomington Police Department, 31-year-old Emerson Evans administered abortion medication to his girlfriend without her knowledge, causing a medical emergency on Friday afternoon. Officers responded to an apartment in Bloomington, finding the woman crying in the bathroom with a significant amount of blood.
The woman told police she was about seven weeks pregnant, and that Evans had indicated he wanted to terminate the pregnancy.
Investigation and Evidence
Evans reportedly admitted to buying mifepristone from someone on a local campus for approximately $50 and claimed he believed the victim knew about the medication, according to police and court documents. Investigators have stated that the drug was given without the woman’s consent.
Police classified the incident as a pregnancy-related medical emergency and began a criminal investigation immediately.
Charges and Potential Penalties
Evans is currently held at the McLean County Detention Facility awaiting a hearing. He has been charged with two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child, a crime under Illinois law with penalties equivalent to first-degree murder, carrying 20 to 60 years in prison if convicted Bloomington Police Department.
