Muskogee County, Okla. – A mother and stepfather in Oklahoma have been arrested after allegedly allowing their 11-year-old daughter to become pregnant and give birth at home without medical personnel present. The pair, Dustin Walker and Cherie Walker, were each charged with one count of felony child neglect.
Details of the Case
The victim, the oldest of six children living in the home, has since been removed along with her siblings. Authorities have not released all details surrounding the child’s pregnancy, but the girl’s grandmother, who identified herself as Michelle, stated the family was unaware of the situation.
“I just want people to know, we did not know this was happening. None of us,” Michelle said.
A neighbor reported that the home was in poor condition, lacking running water for two to three years, and expressed concern over the children’s welfare. Michelle pushed back, explaining the family pets sometimes caused messes but insisted the home was generally cleaned and maintained.
Prosecutor’s Statement
Muskogee County Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson described the case as “heartbreaking” in an interview with Tulsa CBS affiliate KOTV. Hutson emphasized that the child underwent a traumatic ordeal, giving birth without medical supervision.
“This child is traumatized. She’s been through a horrific ordeal. Not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life,” Hutson said.
The prosecutor noted that the parents had kept the child out of school and avoided medical care for over a year, which prevented early detection of the pregnancy. Additional charges may be filed pending the results of a DNA paternity test, expected in about two weeks.
Legal Status of Defendants
The Walkers are being held at the Muskogee County Jail with bond set at $100,000. Their next court appearance has not been announced.
