Hurricane Erin Pushing Life-Threatening Storm Surge Toward North Carolina, Coastal Flooding Expected

Raleigh, North CarolinaHurricane Erin is moving dangerously close to North Carolina’s coastline, bringing life-threatening storm surge and coastal flooding. The storm, located just 335 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, is expected to cause significant impacts along the Outer Banks through Friday.

Up to 4 Feet of Storm Surge Expected

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, 2 to 4 feet of storm surge is anticipated along low-lying parts of the Outer Banks, with tropical storm-force winds likely arriving by late Thursday. Roads such as NC-12 and U.S. Route 70 are at risk of becoming impassable during high tide.

Coastal Flooding and Beach Erosion

Emergency officials have urged residents in Dare, Carteret, and New Hanover counties to remain vigilant as conditions worsen. The storm is expected to cause significant dune erosion, dangerous rip currents, and inland flooding in areas with poor drainage.

Ferry services and bridge access could be restricted, while power outages are possible as winds intensify. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge phones, and avoid non-essential travel along the coast.

Mariners and Coastal Warnings

Gale warnings are in effect offshore, and mariners are urged to remain in port until conditions improve. The storm’s impacts are expected to persist into early Saturday, especially if Erin’s track remains closer to North Carolina than initially predicted.
