Buxton, NCFloodwaters are already affecting parts of NC-12 in Buxton, North Carolina, as coastal flooding worsens ahead of high tide, which is expected to peak around 5 p.m. today. Residents and drivers are being warned to prepare for further flooding as tides rise throughout the evening.

Rising Water Levels on NC-12

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, water levels along parts of the Outer Banks are rising more quickly than anticipated, particularly in low-lying areas of Dare County. A traffic camera image captured water breaching the southbound lanes of NC-12 near Buxton, with more flooding expected as high tide approaches.

Travel Advisory for Outer Banks Residents

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid NC-12 and nearby roads where saltwater has begun to pool. Communities from Hatteras to Rodanthe may experience flooded roadways into the evening, creating dangerous travel conditions.

“Emergency officials are warning against non-essential travel along the Outer Banks as tides and onshore winds continue to push water inland,” the National Weather Service warned.

Precautions and Road Closures Expected

Residents are advised to move vehicles to higher ground and prepare for potential service disruptions or road closures into tonight. This event follows similar flooding patterns seen during last summer’s August king tide event.

High Tide Expected at 5 p.m.

The high tide is expected to crest just after 5 p.m. ET, with additional coastal flooding advisories likely if conditions worsen throughout the night.
