Chicago, IL – Severe thunderstorms hit northern and central Illinois on Monday evening, bringing 60 mph wind gusts, torrential rain, and the risk of flash flooding to multiple counties. As storms move eastward, power outages and dangerous travel conditions are expected for residents in Joliet, Bolingbrook, Plainfield, and surrounding areas.
Severe Weather Threatens Multiple Counties
According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Will, Fulton, Knox, and Peoria counties at around 8 p.m. Monday. Radar data showed strong winds over Naperville, Plainfield, Bolingbrook, and Joliet, while emergency managers confirmed a 57 mph gust in Farmington at 8:12 p.m.
Communities at Immediate Risk
As the storm continues moving east at 40 to 50 mph, areas such as Shorewood, Romeoville, Lockport, Minooka, and Crest Hill are at immediate risk for damaging winds, large hail, and flash flooding. In central Illinois, Trivoli and Hanna City will experience similar threats by late evening.
Flooding and Travel Concerns
Torrential rain has the potential to overwhelm local drainage systems quickly, posing a risk of flooded roads. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded areas and exercise caution while driving.
Safety and Precautions
The National Weather Service advises residents to seek shelter in interior rooms away from windows and to remain alert for additional warnings. If the storms intensify overnight, more advisories and warnings may be issued.
