Hurricane Warning Issued for Bahamas as Atlantic Winds Exceed 100 mph, Dangerous Seas Continue

Nassau, Bahamas – The Bahamas is under a hurricane warning as life-threatening winds and towering seas batter the islands. The National Hurricane Center in Miami warns that winds exceeding 120 mph and seas over 35 feet are impacting the region, creating extremely hazardous conditions for residents and mariners.

Hurricane-Force Winds and Dangerous Surf Expected

According to the National Weather Service, conditions are projected to intensify tonight, with sustained winds between 90 and 110 knots east of 73W. Heavy rain bands sweeping across the islands may reduce visibility on the water to less than one nautical mile, making maritime travel extremely perilous.

Officials emphasize that the Atlantic east of the Bahamas is seeing hurricane-force conditions, with waves towering above 35 feet, creating a serious threat to all coastal and marine activity.

Widespread Impacts Across the Islands

Authorities are warning of widespread power outages, coastal flooding, and impassable roads in low-lying areas, particularly on New Providence, Grand Bahama, and Abaco. Travel by sea is highly dangerous, and residents are urged to remain indoors, secure property, and avoid shoreline activity until conditions improve.

Forecast Through Midweek

By Tuesday, hurricane-force winds are expected to continue across much of the northern Bahamas, with gradual weakening to tropical storm strength by midweek. Despite weakening winds, hazardous seas will persist through Friday, keeping marine operations suspended and maintaining elevated coastal flooding risks.
