Duluth, MNStrong thunderstorms are forecast to move across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin overnight, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding potential, and dangerous rip currents along Lake Superior beaches through Monday morning. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution as conditions worsen.

Thunderstorms Bring Heavy Rain and Flood Risk

According to the National Weather Service Duluth, storms will move through the region late Sunday into early Monday, producing moderate to heavy rainfall that could result in ponding on roads and flooding in low-lying areas.

Breezy east winds reaching 20 mph may increase wave heights along the North Shore, fueling hazardous swimming conditions in the Twin Ports area.

High Rip Current Risk Along Lake Superior

Officials warn that the high rip current risk will continue into Monday, making Lake Superior beaches extremely dangerous for swimmers. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid entering the water until conditions improve.

Communities most at risk include Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors, Ashland, and Bayfield. Motorists should remain cautious as water can quickly accumulate on highways such as U.S. Highway 53 and Minnesota Highway 61 during heavy downpours.

Skywarn Spotters and Additional Alerts

Weather officials have asked Skywarn spotters to remain alert overnight to report rainfall and flooding impacts. Additional alerts may be issued if the storms intensify or track differently than currently forecast.
