Rapid City, SD – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect across western and central South Dakota and parts of the Nebraska Panhandle, including Cherry and Sheridan counties, as storms with damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning continue to develop overnight. The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center warns that conditions could become hazardous for travelers and residents alike.
Storm Threat Across South Dakota and Nebraska
The NWS reports that counties under the watch in South Dakota include Pennington, Meade, Lyman, Hughes, Jones, Todd, Tripp, and Oglala Lakota, among others. In Nebraska, Cherry and Sheridan counties are included as the storms move eastward. Wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning strikes are expected through the night, potentially causing property damage and power outages.
Travel and Safety Precautions
Drivers along I-90, from Rapid City east toward Chamberlain, may encounter torrential downpours and reduced visibility. In Nebraska, travel through Valentine and Gordon could also be affected by fast-moving storms. The NWS urges residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep phones charged for emergency updates.
“Seek shelter indoors and stay away from windows during strong thunderstorms,” advises the National Weather Service.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch will remain in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday, with additional advisories possible if the storms persist into the morning hours. Officials advise monitoring local weather channels and NWS updates throughout the night to stay informed of changing conditions.
