Port St. Lucie, FL – A chilling case that shocked the nation more than a decade ago has resurfaced after Tyler Hadley, now 31, spoke publicly in a 2024 televised interview about the night he murdered his parents and hosted a house party while their bodies lay hidden in a bedroom.
The Brutal Murders Inside the Hadley Home
On July 16, 2011, the then-17-year-old beat his parents, Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley, to death with a claw hammer in their Port St. Lucie home. According to a Court TV Interview with a Killer segment, he dragged their bodies into the master bedroom and covered them with household items — linens, books, picture frames, and towels. He then spent nearly three hours cleaning up blood before posting a cryptic Facebook message: “Party at my crib tonight… maybe.”
That night, more than 60 teens arrived for the gathering, unaware of the grisly scene just down the hall. Some guests noticed a strange odor, while others spotted blood in parts of the home.
Chilling Confession and Disturbing Mindset
In the interview, Hadley admitted to striking his mother from behind while she sat at a computer. His father entered the room, asking, “Why?” to which Hadley replied, “Why the f— not?” He described entering “a sort of psychotic state or trance” as he repeatedly struck them, ignoring their screams and pleas for mercy.
Hadley told investigators he had taken ecstasy beforehand and felt detached during the attack. In the weeks before the murders, he had told friends of his plan — even stating he wanted to throw a party afterward because it had “never been done before.”
The Night of the Party and Discovery of the Bodies
Guests partied in the living room and kitchen while the master bedroom door remained shut. One friend, Michael Mandell, later told ABC News he opened the bedroom door during the party and saw what looked like a leg against it. Realizing Hadley’s claims were true, Mandell called police. Officers arrived early the next morning, found the bodies in the bedroom, and arrested Hadley on the spot.
A blood-covered hammer was discovered between the victims’ bodies, according to CBS News. The family dog had been locked in a closet, and the victims’ cell phones were hidden.
Court Proceedings and Prison Life
In March 2014, Hadley pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree murder and received two consecutive life sentences without parole. Judge Robert R. Makemson called the crime “brutal, heinous and premeditated.” Prosecutors revealed that in prison, Hadley referred to himself as “Hammer Boy” and signed autographs for other inmates.
Reflections More Than a Decade Later
When asked why he committed the murders, Hadley told interviewer David Scott that the idea began as a dark joke among friends while drinking and smoking. Over time, it became an obsession.
“I think it was to stop all of our pain,” Hadley said. “Other than that, I can’t answer that with any clarity. It’s still not clear to me.”
Hadley will be eligible for a sentencing review in 2039, according to the Treasure Coast Newspapers.
