Baton Rouge, LA – Although Thursday evening’s Severe Thunderstorm Warning has officially expired, residents in the Baton Rouge metro area are still facing gusty winds and heavy rainfall that could linger through the night.
Storm Weakens but Risks Remain
The warning, which covered Ascension, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, and East Baton Rouge parishes, was lifted at 6:30 p.m. after the storm weakened below severe thresholds. However, meteorologists caution that the system is still capable of producing potentially damaging wind gusts and localized flooding.
Impact on Evening Commute
Localized impacts could still cause problems for drivers along I-10 and LA-30, particularly in low-lying areas with poor drainage. Emergency officials are advising commuters to remain weather-aware, avoid driving through flooded streets, and report any downed trees or other hazards to law enforcement.
Reduced Severe Threat but Unstable Conditions
While the risk of hail or tornadoes has diminished, forecasters note that unstable atmospheric conditions may persist into early Friday morning, particularly across the southern half of East Baton Rouge Parish. This could bring additional bursts of heavy rain before conditions improve, according to the National Weather Service in New Orleans.
Staying Safe Through the Night
Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather updates, keep flashlights and emergency supplies accessible, and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by gusty winds. If conditions worsen again overnight, further alerts will be issued.
