Newport, NC.- Heavy rain and patchy fog are making it dangerous to travel across Eastern North Carolina this morning. Showers are expected to last into the afternoon, and then another round of thunderstorms will hit the area on Sunday and Monday.
The National Weather Service in Morehead City says that showers and thunderstorms are likely through midday Saturday. Some coastal roads will have patchy fog that makes it hard to see more than a mile ahead. Some places could get close to an inch of rain, especially where thunderstorms form. Winds from the north can gust up to 22 mph, which makes traveling even harder.
The skies will slowly clear up by afternoon, but drivers should stay alert because the roads will still be slippery and visibility will be low. On Sunday, a new round of thunderstorms could hit Newport, Morehead City, and the Outer Banks, bringing short rain showers and strong winds. There is a chance of rain on Monday as well, which makes people worried about minor flooding in low-lying areas.
People who live and travel should stay away from flooded roads, slow down in foggy conditions, and make sure that weather alerts are turned on for their phones. Plan what you’re going to do outside, because the weather could change quickly until the beginning of next week.
Late Tuesday, it starts to dry out, but a few showers might come back by midweek. If more watches or warnings are sent out, more updates will be sent out.
