Woman With Troubled Driving Record Kills 1, Injures 3 in Crash — Then Tries to Flee 'Discreetly'

A woman from Florida with a bad driving record is facing many charges months after she crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a car carrying four people and killed one of them. She then tried to sneak away but failed because “her boyfriend told her to,” according to the police.

Beverly Yvonne Slaughter, 25, is facing 14 charges, some of which are vehicular murder, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and driving while license suspended causing death. An statement for probable cause said the accident happened at the corner of West Sunrise Boulevard and NW 24th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale around 1 a.m. on April 29.

In a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Slaughter was going east on Sunrise near 24th at a “high rate of speed.” A Nissan Altima with a good left turn signal light was turning left as she came into the intersection. The Altima was hit by Slaughter’s Mercedes. A video shows Slaughter reportedly running from her car after the accident.

The statement said that when a police officer from Fort Lauderdale got to the scene, he saw Slaughter “walking extremely discreetly” through the back parking lot of a McDonald’s. Police say the officer ran up to Slaughter and arrested her. Police say Slaughter told them she ran away because “her boyfriend told her to” when they asked her why.

The people in the Altima were rushed to the hospital, and two of them had major injuries. One of them died on May 2 after her life support was turned off.

After Slaughter was arrested on Wednesday, prosecutors asked for her bond to be revoked, saying that her driving past meant she should stay in jail. Her license has been taken away since 2021 because she was found guilty of driving without one two years ago. In 2023, she was also caught for driving while drunk, fleeing or eluding a police officer, and driving recklessly.

Prosecutors say she showed “disregard for the safety of the community” – “there are no conditions of release reasonably sufficient to protect the community from risk of physical harm to person.”

The judge agreed and told the Broward County Jail to hold her without bond. Her next court date is set for this Friday.
