Three free school supply events to help more than 1,100 kids across the Greater Houston area this summer

Thanks to a local initiative that is filling backpacks and easing the transition, over 1,100 elementary students in the Houston area will be starting the new school year a little better prepared and with one less thing for families to worry about as summer comes to an end and families get ready for the back-to-school rush.

As part of the company’s We’re Hear for You program, an employee-led initiative centered on community outreach and hands-on service, staff members from eight Big Star and Texan dealerships that are part of the Ken Garff Automotive Group—which serves communities throughout the Greater Houston area—are giving away free school supplies.

According to a back-to-school retail survey, the average cost of school supplies is $570 per student, and the cost is still rising. That amount quickly mounts up for many families, particularly when many children are involved.

Allen Paul, regional vice president of Ken Garff Automotive Group, stated, “We understand the additional financial strain of buying school supplies as families prepare for a new school year.” We want to reduce that burden.

According to the organizers, every donated bag will be completely stocked with school necessities, such as notebooks, glue sticks, and #2 pencils, all of which will be assembled by dealership staff members.

According to Paul, it’s about giving parents a little more peace of mind and letting children concentrate on their studies.

The supplies will be distributed at three community events this summer:

YES Prep, 507 Crenshaw Road, Houston, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be materials for 500 students.

Ignite Community School, 6651 Hawes Road, Humble, 4–7 p.m. Supplies will be distributed to 250 students.

Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market St., Baytown, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Supplies will be distributed to 400 students.
