It has been found that the graduate student who was last seen in La Crosse, Wisconsin, over the weekend has died.
La Crosse Police said Wednesday around 10:30 a.m. that Eliotte Heinz’s body was found in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota.
“This wasn’t what we had hoped for during the search,” said Shawn Kudron, chief of police in La Crosse. “Our thoughts are with Eliotte’s family, friends, and everyone else who knew her. The abundance of support from people in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and across the country to help us find Eliotte is greatly appreciated.
People in the area had been looking for Heinz since she was last seen early Sunday morning near the 500 block of Front Street South. Volunteers in the search had been meeting at her school, Viterbo University, as a central hub.
The police are still looking into it. We don’t yet know what killed her.
La Crosse is about 15 miles up the river from Brownsville.
