Gale Warnings in Effect: 35-Knot Winds Slam Kodiak, Cook Inlet, and Barren Islands Until Wednesday Night

Gale warnings are still in effect along Alaska’s northern Gulf Coast, meaning that the water is still dangerous. From Gore Point to the Barren Islands, strong winds and high waves will continue to beat the water through Wednesday night.

Anchorage’s National Weather Service says that there will be 35 knot west winds tonight and Wednesday. This will make waves up to 10 feet high from Gore Point to Marmot Island and along Kamishak Bay. All major routes are under notice, including Cook Inlet and the water around Kodiak Island. Wind gusts and waves of 35 knots will continue through Thursday morning.

Ships that are going near Kodiak Island, the Barren Islands, or Kamishak Bay should be ready for rough seas and low vision. The risk is biggest for fishing boats and smaller boats. Mariners are being asked to hold off on leaving, secure their gear, and stay in safe harbor until the gale warnings end. Emergency managers say to keep an eye on the VHF radio for quick updates and make sure all of your safety gear is ready.

The winds will slowly die down from Thursday night to Friday morning, but the seas will still be rough, with gusts up to 25 knots from the northwest. The winds will likely move north over the weekend and ease up a bit, but the waves will still be rough.

Boaters should expect delays, make sure their boats are stable, and be ready for quick changes in the weather. Gale warnings will stay in effect at least until late Wednesday night, and they may change as the storm moves across the Gulf.
