The mother of a Nevada child who locked her son up for more than a year in a cramped room that contained nothing more than a pail to use as a restroom is going to be sentenced to prison.
According to the Storey County District Court, Tammy Hinds was given a term that ranged from two to five years in addition to her current sentence. To the principal, Hinds entered a guilty plea to the charge of child neglect in April.
In May of 2024, Hinds, who was 34 years old at the time, was arrested along with her mother, Nancy Hinds. This occurred after law enforcement officers doing a welfare check at a residence in the Tunnel Road neighborhood of Gold Hill discovered a kid who was 14 years old trapped inside of a small room. It was necessary for the boy to receive medical attention.
“The investigation revealed that the child did not have access to restroom facilities, as well as food and water,” the Storey County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release at the time during the inquiry.
A report that was filed in the courtroom stated that the deputies who were present at the scene “detected a strong odor of human urine and waste.” It was said that the room was situated above the garage, where he was compelled to remain for a total of twenty-three hours each day. He was only permitted to leave for one hour in order to eat and use the restroom.
Both the youngster and his sister were taken into custody by the Department of Child and Family Services before they were released.
Both Tammy and Nancy Hinds were initially charged with false imprisonment as well as child abuse or neglect against their respective children. The case involving the elder Hinds is still continuing.
A statement was made by Tammy Hinds to the court prior to her being sentenced.
According to media reports, she stated, “I failed as a parent for both of my children.”
Via Zoom, her son, who is now 15 years old, also testified during the trial.
“I’m not scared of my mother anymore,” he stated in response.
A television station conducted an interview with Nancy Hinds earlier this year.
Her response to the news that the youngster had been placed in foster care was as follows: “I’m fine with that because he destroyed our family,” she stated.
When asked about the boy’s physical illnesses, Nancy Hinds stated that he was “mental” and had “lots of issues.”
The foster parents of the youngster have reported that he is making significant progress in both his physical and emotional health ever since he was removed from his mother’s residence.
