Xiaomi’s own record has been surpassed! It sold 200,000 copies of its latest electric SUV, the YU7, in just three minutes.Sales had already reached 289,000 units an hour later. With this car, Xiaomi has created quite a stir, demonstrating not only that it is making significant market moves but also that it is genuinely interested in unseating the Tesla Model Y in China. And even though they’ve already surpassed it with their SU7 sedan, they’re still aiming higher!
Xiaomi is more than just a phone brand thanks to public support, a huge demand, and a far better technology offering. As it makes its way into the podium of the most potent electric vehicles in the world, it is growing even more in the automobile industry. And it’s bringing it to pass!
The Xiaomi YU7 phenomenon
It may sound like a joke to unveil a car, start pre-orders that same evening, and sell out hundreds of thousands of units in a matter of minutes, but Xiaomi has done just that with the YU7. An electric SUV that looks to be more than just a substitute—it poses a direct challenge to Tesla’s hegemony in the Asian market.
Three minutes and 200,000 orders
For anyone, the amount is astounding. Three minutes after the pre-order period began, Xiaomi had 200,000 units reserved. The number rose to 289,000 reservations in a single hour. These are refundable, to be sure, but they show how eager Chinese buyers are for this new product.
Beating the SU7 by far
When compared to the Xiaomi SU7, which received 88,898 orders in a single day, the success is even more remarkable! And we believed it to be a phenomenon! In a fraction of the time, the YU7 has more than doubled those numbers. Does this car have a craze among Chinese people?
The goal: dethrone the Tesla Model Y
The conflict has begun. Xiaomi is obviously aiming for the Tesla Model Y, the country’s top-selling electric SUV, which shipped 480,000 units in China alone by the end of 2024.
A car made to compete
The YU7 comes with a well-defined plan. It is a direct competitor of the Model Y, not a side project or experiment. It is very competitively priced and offers advancements in technology, range, and charging speed.
China, a favourable ground for Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s ascent has been made possible by the trade friction with the United States and the growing popularity of indigenous brands. The YU7 seems to be the ideal substitute in a market where buyers are favoring Chinese goods more and more because it is domestic, cutting edge, and reasonably priced.
And what if Xiaomi had already done it before?
This is demonstrated by the SU7, which Xiaomi outsold the Tesla Model 3 in December 2024 with 25,815 sold as opposed to 21,046 of Musk’s car. It rose to the fourth-best-selling electric vehicle in the nation with that single action. It sold 135,000 copies by the end of the year, almost twice as many as its competitor.
Even with only one model available, Xiaomi has surpassed industry heavyweights like ZEEKR and Lynk&CO to rank among China’s top 20 automakers in terms of sales. The objective now is to move up from 24th to 7th spot, which Tesla held in May of this year, with the YU7. And it doesn’t sound crazy with these figures.
Tesla responds but is it enough?
With 43,370 sold in March 2025, the Model Y was China’s top-selling electric vehicle. However, the SU7, which isn’t even in the same market, sold more than 27,000 units in that same month.
Tesla’s position may be in grave danger now that Xiaomi has an electric SUV in the same class with superior features and greater appeal to Chinese buyers.
Is the sorpasso coming?
Everything suggests that the answer is yes. Xiaomi continues to expand as Tesla contends with a market that prioritizes affordability and regional creativity, as well as more national competition. Its advantage now lies in the numbers and how quickly it obtains them, not merely in the name.
In three minutes, 200,000 orders were placed. Xiaomi is already competing on a major scale.
