General Motors, or GM, has had to issue a recall notice for over 62,000 Chevrolet Silverados due to safety issues. The issue? A braking problem could cause them to catch fire.

The most concerning aspect is that the fire may start even while the car is parked, so GM advises owners to store their vehicles outside of garages or other enclosed spaces until they are repaired!

What is happening with General Motors (GM)?

This is just one more indication that this has not been GM’s best five-year run. This issue began in 2023 when GM issued a recall for 23V-266, brake fluid leaks that may have impacted the pressure sensor’s wiring. Naturally, the issue was meant to be resolved, but subsequent research revealed that the flaw still existed in cars that had been altered.

New field reports

The alarm was sparked in October 2024 by a report regarding a 2023 Silverado that was left out of the initial recall. And this one was flawed!

Naturally, they continued their investigation, adding two more cases in December and January. GM found they had a new issue: an illegal material in the rubber diaphragm was causing the material to deteriorate by reacting with the brake fluid. Complete disaster.

Which vehicles are affected?

The models in question are:

  • Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD
  • Chevrolet Silverado 5500HD
  • Chevrolet Silverado 6500HD

All of these cars were produced between 2019 to September 9, 2024, so if you own one, you should be aware of this recall.

However, if your car was manufactured after September 9, you don’t need to worry because it already has a new wire harness with silicone sealing.

But what s wrong with the cars?

Have you not heard? Fires may result from a short circuit in the brake pressure switch, which causes it to overheat and release a liquid into the brake wiring.

What has GM done?

A month after GM contacted Akron Rubber Development Lab (ARDL) to examine the materials used to seal the diaphragm on March 3, it became evident that the fluid leak was causing it to deteriorate. After one car accident, GM was forced to notify the Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) of a safety recall.

What should owners do?

First, check to see if your car is covered by this recall. You can determine whether this defect affects your car by using your VIN and the official NHTSA website.

The wire harness for the brake pressure switch will be replaced for free if you take your Silverado to the closest dealer or authorized repair.

Although GM will send out another notification once the replacement part is available, if you have noticed anything unusual and would like to schedule your appointment earlier, don’t hesitate to do so. The recall letters will begin to be sent on July 28.

Keep in mind that you might still require an additional dealership visit if your car was previously fixed under action 23V-266!

Where to check if your car is on the list?

To find out if their car is covered by recall number N242482680, owners can call GM at 1-866-467-9700 or go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website.

A serious problem

GM has received over 160 complaints of occurrences that may be connected to this issue, even though only one fire has been proven. Although the company claims it will keep collaborating with its suppliers to avoid such mistakes in the future, we think the harm to its reputation has already been done.

GM, prepare for the arrival of 62,000 Silverados at your workshops.
