The entire nation was taken aback when Ford announced that sales of their preferred electric vehicle, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, would be temporarily suspended. The entire automotive industry was obviously on edge as a result of this measure. If the auxiliary battery falls below 8.4 volts, the electronic door handle mechanism in the car has flaws that might imprison the occupants inside. Furthermore, even while we enjoy living in our automobiles, it’s not really

We are discussing around 200,000 units in the US and over 300,000 units globally. Dealers are not permitted to sell the company’s flagship electric crossover in the interim, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has already announced the recall and the brand is working on a free software upgrade! Curious about what transpired? We’ll explain below.

Another Ford recall

Yes, as you can see, there has been yet another Ford recall, and we have already lost count of them in recent years. This time, a lot more cars are impacted than those in the NHTSA recall; 120,000 Mustang Mach-Es in our nation alone, and around 300,000 units worldwide, have also been recalled.

Production dates of the vehicles?

From February 24, 2020, to June 3, 2025

But what s the issue?

The battery is the issue this time. 12 V, although the module that manages the electronic handles maintains the last recorded state—locked or unlocked—if it discharges below 8.4 V.

The car can move from shelter to trap if the doors are closed since the external handles stop working when the vehicle is shut off, which causes the DC-DC converter to stop providing the low-voltage network.

Although there is a mechanical lever for residents to use to exit from the inside, doing so requires opening the front hood, applying external current to the auxiliary terminals, and restoring the voltage—a procedure that is impossible in the event of an emergency involving children or pets.

The NHTSA reaction

According to the official report (25V404), 197,432 automobiles of this model are impacted in the United States. Families who were unable to get back into the automobile with their kids inside have complained to the agency six times since November 2023. After examining four warranty claims and three service reports, NHTSA contacted the brand on January 10. Ford issued the stop-sale order but decided against conducting a stop-drive because it understood that the risk would only become apparent after the auxiliary battery discharged and that, in practice, the vehicle could be driven without endangering the user.

Ford s plan:

Ford is still working on the solution, but all indications are that a software update will be released shortly (though they haven’t given a specific date yet). Beginning on September 29, 2025, customers will also soon get notification letters. We won’t be able to purchase this car from dealerships in the interim.

What else do we need to know?

According to the NHTSA study, the software update will need to impact the vehicle’s Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module C (SOBDMC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Naturally, users will not have to pay for it.

Therefore, even if users must stop by the workshop, Ford will pay for all expenses (though it’s unclear why it can’t be done wirelessly).

What if I have a Mustang Mach-E?

Wait till the software is released, then. The business advises monitoring the system to save power by keeping an eye out for any warnings on the central screen, such as a black screen or the need to exert more force on the handle within. It is advised to contact a dealership to inspect the battery’s condition if any of these symptoms emerge, and to replace it right away if chronic depletion is found.

Ford in check

These vehicles’ systems must maintain essential tasks even when there is no electricity present, don’t you think? Ford’s latest recall puts them back in the public eye regarding road safety and casts doubt on electrification.

If you drive a Mach-E, use caution to avoid getting locked in an electric submarine for all time.
