Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office officers detained a man who they suspect was driving under the influence when he slammed his Toyota Camry into a power pole on Saturday, killing his passenger.
Leonardo Bollas-Zafra, 28, was taken into county jail on charges of manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence, and reckless endangerment.
According to a news release, sheriff’s deputies received an automatic collision notice from a Toyota Camry in Fairview approximately 2:20 a.m. on Saturday. Around the same time, Bollas-Zafra called police to report being the victim of a hit-and-run, according to the news release.
Deputies discovered Bollas-Zafra and his car near the intersection of Northeast 158th Avenue and Northeast Fremont Street. He “appeared confused and struggled to answer questions,” according to the news release.
When officers examined the crash site near Northeast 201st Avenue and Northeast Broadway Court, about three miles away, they discovered an unconscious guy on the side of the road, according to the press release. According to reports, deputies tried CPR on the individual but he died.
The sheriff’s office believes the man was a passenger in Bollas-Zafra’s Camry when it collided with a power pole. According to the news release, a hospital blood test revealed that Bollas-Zafra had a blood alcohol level of.23, approximately three times the legal limit.
