Lake Effect Snow Hits Chicago: What You Need to Know

Lake Effect Snow Hits Chicago What You Need to Know

The first full work week of 2025 is kicking off with freezing drizzle and lake effect snow in the Chicago area, making travel dangerous. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake and Northern Cook Counties, effective until 4 p.m. today.

Morning Freezing Drizzle Brings Icy Roads

AccuWeather warns that the early hours will see spotty freezing drizzle. Even a thin layer of ice can make roads and sidewalks slippery, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Untreated surfaces could become very dangerous, so extra caution is necessary.

The icy weather has already caused significant disruptions at O’Hare International Airport, where a ground stop lasted for over two hours, ending at 9:30 a.m.. So far, more than 150 flights have been canceled at O’Hare, while nearly 30 cancellations were reported at Midway Airport.

Lake Effect Snow Expected by Afternoon

As the day progresses, a lake effect snow band will move into the area. Light snow showers are expected, with most places getting 1 to 3 inches of snow. However, areas in the northern suburbs could see heavier accumulations.

The snow, combined with strong northeast winds, will make conditions feel even colder. Temperatures will struggle to rise above 30°F, and wind chills will dip into the teens, making it feel much colder than the actual temperature.

Colder Days Ahead

The rest of the week doesn’t look any warmer. AccuWeather predicts highs in the mid to upper 20s as the week continues. Residents should be prepared for more cold and possibly more winter weather.

For those commuting or traveling today, stay updated on weather alerts and flight cancellations. Driving conditions may worsen, so it’s best to allow extra time and drive carefully.
