DETROIT (latestsports) A 28-year-old Southfield man lost his life early Wednesday morning on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit after being struck by a vehicle while assisting a driver involved in a rollover crash.
According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Webb Street. A woman driving a Jeep reportedly lost control of her vehicle, hitting a median wall, which caused the SUV to overturn.
The man, a passenger in the Jeep, managed to pull the woman from the wreckage. However, as he walked back to the vehicle, he was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu traveling northbound. The driver of the Malibu remained at the scene, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released details about the condition of the Jeep’s driver.
Michigan State Police emphasized the dangers of being outside a vehicle during a crash. “If you’re involved in a crash, stay in your vehicle if it’s safe to do so,” urged Lt. Mike Shaw. “If staying in the vehicle isn’t an option, move as far away from traffic lanes as possible.”
Investigators are examining both the cause of the Jeep’s initial crash and the circumstances leading to the pedestrian fatality. Once their investigation is complete, a report will be submitted to prosecutors.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with roadside emergencies and the importance of caution in such situations.
