Interstate 25 was fully reopened early Wednesday morning after a series of crashes, including one involving a fire truck, caused closures near Castle Rock. The incident disrupted traffic between Denver and Colorado Springs late Tuesday night.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) first reported the closure around 8:30 p.m. due to crashes in both directions of the highway. The affected stretch was between mile markers 174 and 181. By 9:15 p.m., traffic cameras showed emergency lights at the scene, with significant backups in both directions.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, all lanes were cleared and reopened by approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A Colorado State Patrol (CSP) spokesperson confirmed that at least three separate crashes occurred in the area, one of which involved a fire engine. Another crash involved four vehicles, while a third incident included three vehicles.
Icy road conditions were cited as a contributing factor in some of the accidents. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
Elsewhere, icy conditions also caused problems near Northglenn, just north of Denver, where southbound lanes and portions of the northbound lanes of I-25 were closed Tuesday night due to at least one crash.
Authorities remind drivers to exercise caution when traveling in icy conditions, as freezing temperatures and slick roads can lead to dangerous situations.
